Born in San José, Costa Rica, he holds an M.A. in Latin American Studies and a Ph.D. in Literature from University of California San Diego. He has published four books of fiction: the short story collection A los cuatro vientos and the novels Verano rojo (awarded the 2010 National Literature Prize in Costa Rica), Lluvia del norte and Mazunte. His short stories have appeared in several anthologies and his three novels have been translated into French. He has also been invited to participate in festivals like the Quais du Polar, Le Marathon Des Mots, Toulouse Polars du Sud, the Guadalajara International Book Fair, Medellín Negro and Centroamérica Cuenta.

As an academic, he has published articles in A Contracorriente, Istmo and Romance Notes. He has also contributed articles to La Nación, El Faro, Avianca en Revista, among others. His research interests include: Creative Writing, Latin American Crime Fiction, Latin American Film, and Central American Literature and Film.

At Lafayette, he teaches courses on Latin American film and literature, as well as creative writing.
