In addition to its language programs, the Department of Foreign Languages & Literary Studies offers courses on second-language acquisition, including teaching methodology and language pedagogy.
How do people learn another language? The primary goal of this course is to introduce students to a vibrant and expanding branch of language science and, more generally, to cognitive science as it relates to the study of second language acquisition. This course is designed for those interested in theories and processes of language learning or for those seeking a career in language teaching. [W]
Students meet with the instructor on a weekly basis to study teaching methodology, language pedagogy, and second-language acquisition theory. This course also gives students the opportunity to apply what they learn and gain language teaching experience under faculty supervision in local elementary, middle, and high schools. Practicums are available in French, German, Korean, Russian, and Spanish are available.
Prerequisite: 211 or higher, or permission of instructor
